LOL thats awesome! good old tom to save us from all that nonsense! :)

    me

    i love you

    paleoplant

yeah, but now Ugg’s friend now thinks there’s a “guy like Ugg who live on cloud”. Zap ‘em both!

    Franlkin

Intolerance? In 2008? Grow up. Stop discriminating against religious people. Will things like 9-11, the Spanish inquisition, and the Holocaust give religions a bad name forever? Being anti-religion in general is just as bad as singling out one religion.

    snow

“will things like 9-11 Spanish inquisition and holocaust give religion a band name forever?” YES! horrible atrocities have been done in the name of religion for a very long time. The three things you mention all happened withing hundred of years but how long has man walked the earth? religion has served its purpose now its time for it to vanish into lala land, where people like bush rule.

    Anon

Don’t forget all the Crusades, and the fact that Isreal will never be at peace, and the centuries of fighting amongst protistant and catholic irish

    jp

“horrible atrocities have been done in the name of religion for a very long time”

Big deal. If it’s not in the name of religion, it’ll be in the name of democracy or in the name of patriotism or whatever; it’s not like removing religion will suddenly change human nature.

    Legion

Oh internet, you never fail to enter into a debate over religion… which is why I love you!

P.S. I actually tried to read the bible recently, and all I can say is… seriously people? Now all I can fantasize about is two chicks getting me drunk and having their way with me… CURSE YOU BIBLICAL EROTICA!

    Missie Voyager

I agree that if there was no religion people would still find a basis for discrimination and therefore an excuse to kill one another. It seems to be fairly natural for people to create mythology and accept it as the absolute truth, and then for some to question it. It is also fairly natural to have a sense of humour about things…

It is not intolerance of religion, its intolerance of ignorance, to think all we have accomplished, yet still a huge portion of people still think theres an invisible man in the sky, i mean c’mon, how much more proof do you need that evolution makes sense and creation is just rubbish

“horrible atrocities have been done in the name of religion for a very long time”

ok to this guy, your just an idiot, peoples Faith blinds them into justifying horrible acts, you really think people will commit the types of crimes that have been justified by religion with any other motive?, think for once!

    Ian

I couldn’t give a shit whether religion causes violence or not. I just don’t like people who think there’s a fairy living at the bottom of the garden. They’re idiots.

    Ian

I couldn’t give a toss whether religion causes violence or not. I just don’t like people who think there’s a fairy living at the bottom of the garden. They’re idiots.

    Aleks

snow, you are and idiot, religion still serves a perpouse to those who actually have one, just because you are an athist bastard does not mean veryone is

listen snow, you are and idiot… all three of you should know that religion still serves porpoise to those who order it… it’s been on the menu for years and will be for years to come…

incidentally… just so noone’s confused by this comic. It’s not poking fun at “religion”… it’s just poking fun at believing that there’s a little man with a beard who looks just like us, who lives on a cloud… I mean it’s all there… y’know.. in the comic :)

You’ve gotta admit, it’s up there with “people are better if their skin reflects more light” or “masturbation makes your hands fall off” or “the flat earth sits atop the back of a giant turtle” on the silliness scale…

    LegoRemix

See I’m Semi-religious but as I have a problem with Atheists , I don’t think they’re heathens but COME ON! Just because you don’t believe in a God/Gods/Godess doesn’t mean you have some sort of moral authority on how “evil religion is ” or “how religion has served it’s purpose”. You really don’t, and Stop lumping all religious people together, not everyone believes God is humanoid, lots believe god is an amorphous power over the universe, not some cosmic “I was here first now obey me god” but a universal spark.

Another thing is lots of atheist say “that religion is useless now” due to Human “reason”. Ok, I have a breakthrough for you, Logic, Reason, and Rationing, aren’t set paths to think about things. They are PROCESSES. No Human has 100% clear logic etc, Why? Because humans have bias, prejudice, different backgrounds etc. I find it childish when athiests say essentially “If you don’t see the world from my view, your a fool”. As a nice stat, 40% of scientists believe in a God, Does that make them less rational, less logic, and less able to be good scientists? I think not.

Also, stop saying religion has no purpose, and is inherently violent. Millions even Billions of Religious people fell called by their faith to donate to , and serve the poor. People give up careers for the benefit of others because they fell called by what you call “an inherently violent system”. Billions if not Trillions are donated each year to RELIGIOUS Charites that do massive amount of God. In my home country of Nigeria, the only decent schools are Either Private and Ridicolously expensive, or set up by “EVIL religous folk”. these schools while they have Some religion in them, are mainly secular and accept muslims, animists, and athiests. Religion still does a massive amount of good in the world. FYI, No christian ever says those atrocities ( Holocaust, etc.) were justified, they were caused by corrupt church officials (in the cursades case up to the Pope who was selling “indulgences” or passes to heaven which has been condemed by later Popes) and in the Holocausts case….IT WASN’T RELIGIOUS IN NATURE AT ALL. It was cause by resentment about Germany’s poverty after WWI and by the dependence of Germany on Credit from Banks that they PERCEIVED to be all Jewish owned. So when Hitler arose there was hatred towards the Jews who they percieved were taking advantage of Germany for money (Only some i’ve heard of practiced Usury or taking large amounts of interest on a loan someone needs but it was rare). So Hilter could easily rally the German Populace (WHO HAPPENED TO BE CHRISTIAN) to combat the “outsiders who humilated Germany” during and in the aftermath of WWI. So Hilter attempted to cleanse the world of ALL none Arayans (including ‘Gypsies’, blacks, gays, jews, and everyone who even looked jewish, arabs too, basically all non arayans, Yes this include Christians who were minorities or even stood up to the Nazi’s and hid Jews ( Many seem to forget about these heroes))

Back to the Crusades …Christians were killed by the Crusaders too FYI.

So the holocaust was a backlash and RACIAL, not SECTARIAN.

Back to practicing Religion. Much to must people surprise Darwin was NOT an Athiest or a Christian. While he was disgusted with the present Church he MAINTENED a belief in an External maker a “God” of sorts. So even the much exalted Darwin wasn’t anti religion.

To be Short, Religion isn’t a silly fantasy, if you dismiss it as such then I can easily dismiss the concept of “100% true human logic” which in itself seems to be forming into almost “God” like concept to atheist ie something infallible, always there, that should dictate your actions. Religion isn’t the source of all evil, people seem to just want to scapegoat something, but HUMANITY, by definition imperfect beings with SELFISH desires, prejudice, limitations, and other flaws, is the source of all evil. Being Human is the root cause of all negative things. But also all positive. Religion is just one of the “excuses” people use to do atrocities like the Inquistion(yet again corrupt clergy and people who weren’t educated followed blindly because they would be killed/excommunicated if they didn’t and both are equally bad back then) just like Money, just like Science (Studies have been published that say blacks are inferior and many a well regarded scientist have confessed this view). Racial Superioty, Class, History, Customs, Logic ( one can “reasonablely” say that for instance blacks are inferior to whites in most cases because they were oppressed by whites in the past indicating technolgical and fighting inferioty, have a dispropiately high amount in jail (ie natural violence, stupidty etc) and because a disproportantely less part particpates in high-level jobs like engineering , science, mathematics, etc.)

Relgion, just like Logic is a human construct, and is therefore imperfect, but I provides benefits that outway the negatives, just like Logic. You can’t just dismiss an idea that was central to the very formation of civilization (most cities formed around a powerful, group of priests/priest-kings). Religion still has pertience till today and into the future. Many scientists that provided the back bone of modern science were Christians (Gregor Mendel a monk, etc) please consult the wikipedia on Christian Science for more….

In closing please stop rejecting religion as whole because it doesn’t suit you

    Fatal

If you don’t believe in anything, fine. Don’t try to discriminate against people that actually want more than this that we live in today. You might look forward to getting rid of global warming, and religious people may want to be able to be in a world where there is no problems like that.

    anon

To LegoRemix and Fatal all the other theists:

All your psuedo-intellectual bullshit and bile is for nothing, unless you can offer some PROOF to back up ANY theistic religion. If you can’t, it doesn’t matter what else you say. You’re defending a mindset in which it’s somehow valid to believe in things without proof. You could believe in the tooth fairy or that garden gnomes come to life at night and have raves on your lawn and so morning dew is really gnome sweat and people would rightly call you a wacko and steer clear of you on the street…but you went into that much supposed detailed thought to apologize for people who espouse the same nonsensical belief in various deities?

I am an atheist because there is no proof for any of the mystical phenomena collectively covered by world religions. It’s not my choice. It’s just the default state of any truly thinking person. I can’t believe something until I have some kind of reason to, beyond someone’s say-so.

I see faith– that is, belief in anything for NO REASON– as an irresponsible and basically unethical process…and you know what? Most religious people agree with me most of the time. If I want to get a loan and the bank asks for collateral, am I going to get anywhere just asking them to have “faith” that I’ll pay the loan back? No. Would most people be happy with a justice system that could imprison anyone without any kind of evidence or proof of guilt? Again, most people wouldn’t accept that. Plenty of people have died in revolutionary wars because they could no longer accept having to put that wort of “faith” in their government.

Knowing all that, it takes some impressive gall to get in MY face because, as an atheist(and spell it right, geniuses, this forum even has a spell-check), I have the guts to stay on the side of logic and reason even when they tell me that there’s no god to save me and if I died tomorrow, I’d just rot in the ground.

To Fatal, who said “Don’t try to discriminate against people that actually want more than this that we live in today.”:

Don’t you think I’d want that? Don’t you think I wish there was some shred of evidence that there might be something beyond this world? Don’t you realize that I’d be pleased as punch to wake up after a bus hits me and find it ain’t all over after all?

But I cannot just choose to believe in something based on that. It’s childish to just believe something because you WANT it to be true. It’s STUPID to believe in something just because you want it to be true.

    Seona

ooo, someone hit a nerve! For the record, the comic is pretty funny :)

legoremix is a pretty rocking guy… agnosticism ftw…
we’re all really agnostic… it takes a certain amount of conceit to pretend we know enough to be full blood atheist or full blood theist… even more to pretend that a HOLY ALL UNITING, OMNIPRESENT FORCE OF LOVE AND CREATION can only be discovered if you think of it as a guy with a beard, and reading about it in a book controlled by, and written by specific, chosen groups of creatures called humans on a tiny blue planet called earth… some omnipresent god you’ve got there if people can’t reach “it” just cause they were raised on a peaceful island somewhere far from missionaries, bibles and anthropomorphic cloud dwellers/turtle back earth/flying spaghetti monster/sun god tall tales…

I’m a card carrying agnostic/Buddhist. I think that this cartoon is funny as hell.

    btw

    joke is as joke does

The madness and violence generated by unquestioned religious texts is a threat to us today. Read the news. The men who flew the planes into the Twin Towers believed they were going straight to Paradise and would be able to pick 70 people to go with them and would be met there by some 30+ “dark-eyed virgins” and they believed that because they believed the Koran and the Koran recognizes Jesus and the Virgin Mary of the New Testament and the Muslims consider themselves descendents of the Old Testament’s Abraham (father of the Jews, ancestor of King David, ancestor of Jesus).

Here is a list of recent religious conflicts that have cost millions of lives in the past ten years. Btw, when the word “Orthodox” is mentioned it is a type of Christian):

    - Palestine (Jews vs. Muslims)
    - The Balkans (Orthodox Serbians vs. Catholic Croations)
    - The Balkans (Orthodox Serbians vs. Bosnian and Albanian Muslims)
    - Northern Ireland (Protestants vs. Catholics)
    - Kashmir (Muslims vs. Hindus)
    - Sudan (Muslims vs. Christians and animists)
    - Nigeria (Muslims vs. Christians)
    - Ethiopia and Eritrea (Muslims vs. Christians)
    - Sri Lanka (Sinhalese Buddhists vs. Tamil Hindus)
    - Indonesia (Muslims vs. Timorese Christians)
    - Caucasus ( Orthodox Russians v. Chechen Muslims
    - Caucasus (Muslim Azerbaijanis vs. Catholic and Orthodox Armenians)

There is no reason why religious faith and doctrine shouldn’t be questioned and discussed. The violent actions of “the faithful” give us direct cause us to address their beliefs even and especially because those beliefs come from the same texts that a moderate non-violent person’s beliefs. The moderates just choose to ignore the urging to violence that is in both versions of the Bible and the Koran and focus on the “love and help” messages that stand in direct contradiction to them.
